Falmouth Town (0) 1 Helston Athletic (0) 0
In their first Boxing Day derby fixture for four years Falmouth Town snatched a vital victory over local rivals Helston Athletic. In a match of few clear cut chances it was Rob Wearne who snatched the all important goal with eight minutes remaining to take Town a point above Helston in the table with two games in hand. A special mention for sixteen year old substitute Olly Walker who came on to make his debut and set up the winning goal.
The first half was evenly matched with the most notable incident being a handball from Helston’s keeper Barrie-Wyatt that could easily have resulted in a red card but the stand-in keeper was given the benefit of the doubt and only a yellow card ensued.
The second half saw Helston take a lead in possession but it was Town who had the clearest openings with Dan Greet in particular coming closest to breaking the deadlock. In the end though it came down to Wearne’s close rang finish from Walker’s pass to give Andrew Westgarth’s team a deserved victory.
